Compass Points Summary

The summary below contains spoilers for Compass Points. It is intended for those who have already read Compass Points but want a refresher before starting Tangled Power.

Rose has spent ten years as an underestimated weapons seller in the northern village of Bury. Along with her normal wares, she’s also secretly a powerful magical weapons maker. She lives a quiet existence with her animal companion, Arie.

A dark mist has slowly been taking over the continent. Every village taken leaves the villagers in a state of living death, and anyone who ventures into the borders of taken villages suffers the same fate.

The same day that a Suden fae approaches Rose for a custom magical weapon, the mist takes the village of Bury. Armed with her magical weapons, Rose and the fae, Luc, try to defend the village only to realize they’re too late. In the process they learn that Rose’s magical weapons possess the ability to stop the mist plague from taking them along with the rest of the village.

Rose’s young mentee, Tara, has fallen to the mist, and Rose can’t ignore her weapons’ potential to stop the mist from taking hold. Luc reveals himself not just to be Suden fae but to be the Suden Point, the most powerful Suden and ruler of one of the four fae courts. He wants Rose to accompany him to Compass Lake, the seats of power for all fae courts, to make custom magic weapons for him.

Rose has been running from Compass Lake for ten years, but for Tara and those without anyone to defend them on the continent, she’s willing to see if her weapons will make a difference against this mysterious mist plague.

Though she’s hiding from one of the Compass Points, agreeing to be Luc’s fake lover for the duration of her stay gives her the protection she needs from her past.

Luc is too observant for his own good, and Rose hasn’t been around another fae in ten years. He realizes that there is much more to Rose than she initially led him to believe. As they travel together, Rose realizes there is more to the Suden Point than a power-hungry fae leader.

Lines in their fake relationship blur as they narrowly avoid the Norden Point, Rose’s childhood friend, Aiden, who killed her family and tried to kill her to take the Norden Point position.

The Compass Points are more out of balance than Rose thought, and she wonders if Aiden is being controlled by another being every time she sees his eyes flash grey instead of their usual bright blue. Rose suspects that Aiden has been taken by Zrak, the Lost God, god of the Osten, who sacrificed himself five hundred years ago to create balance on the continent.

As Rose’s trust in Luc grows, she tells him that she’s not only the rightful Norden Point but also has Osten wind magic, entirely uncommon among the fae. The fae courts do not intermingle. They are solely focused on keeping lines of power pure within the courts.

With the support of Luc and Arie, Rose decides to make her claim as the Norden Point known.

It all comes to a head when Rose reveals herself to Aiden at the Summer Solstice Ball. He attempts to kill her again with poison, catching Luc instead as he cuts in on their dance. Rose confronts her feelings for Luc as she sees him almost die before her. Arie comes to the rescue, saving Luc and showing off he has more power than Rose had previously considered.

Aiden can’t perform his duties at the Lake Refilling Ceremony the following day. Rose steps in to complete the Norden Point’s role and claim her position. The being that has taken Aiden erupts in rage and causes a sandstorm on the beach to attack Rose. Arie, of course, tags along.

The Suden god, Aterra, controls Aiden and holds Aurora, goddess of the Norden, hostage. Arie is Arctos, the god of the Vesten, and he is desperately trying to right the wrongs of the four gods.

Aterra in Aiden’s body slips away through cracks in the earth, and Rose and Luc are left to decide what to do next. They take the win in having driven Aiden from Compass Lake but know that their journey is only beginning, and that Rose will have to take the Norden seat, and they’ll have to go after Aterra to have a chance to rid the continent of the mist plague.
